Why Spay/Neuter?

PROS

Spaying

  • Mammary cancer prevention – spaying prior to the first heat cycle reduces the risk or mammary cancer to almost zero
  • Prevention of pyometra – an often fatal infection of the uterus, also removes the risk of uterine or ovarian cancers and cysts
  • Convenience – no need to deal with bloody vaginal discharge or unwanted attention from male dogs
  • Can often result in calmer pets –  not wanting to roam and find a mate

Neutering

  • Reduce unwanted behavior – roaming, fighting, urine marking
  • Reduction of prostate cancer –  infection and hyperplasia (abnormal growth)
  • Prevention of hernias, testicular torsion, or testicular cancer
  • Reduce preputial discharge
  • Helps reduce the pet population by preventing unwanted pregnancies

CONS

Spaying and neutering can change your pet’s metabolism resulting in weight gain if there is no reduction in food consumption. Risks of surgery include adverse reaction to anesthesia, infection, and bleeding.
